Pacific Disaster Risk Management Project


The Tonga Community Development Trust is participating in the Pacific Regional Disaster Risk Management Project funded by the Government of Australia. The project is coordinated and executed by Planning International Australia, an international NGO based in Melbourne, Australia. The participating countries are Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Kiribati and Tonga.


The aim of the project is to build the capacity of government agencies, non-government organization and communities in Tonga in disaster risk management.

Expected Output/Activities:

  1. Build capacity of relevant Government Ministries – work in partnership with the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO), as well as other line Ministries to make policies relevant to community issues and needs. Empower the work of clusters and technical working groups;
  2. Build capacity of Non-Government Organization (NGO) – organize monthly NGO forum to share information and experience in disaster risk management. Encourage working as a team to share human and financial resources.
  3. Community Evacuation Centre – coordinate community trainings with the presence of key stakeholders to assess the appropriateness of evacuation centers. Training should also cater for the communities to practice what to do in time of disaster.
